I think the families chose to help because they felt sympathy for them and wanted to prevent anyone else who was considered a "Jew" from dieing. The families did as much as they could to help. Every time they would need something (like food), they would go out and get it for them, but it was very limited supplies. Though they were all in a really crammed place, at least they were safe for the time being.
